Piano Scene #4: Titles We Give To Music

Naming a song is one of the most intimate parts of creating an album.

When the music carries no lyrics, like in my solo albums, the title becomes the only spoken word, the one that opens the door to a whole inner world.

Since the beginning of my career, I’ve always chosen my titles with great care. They are not decorations. They are clues. Keys. Invitations.

For PLANET, my first album, each piece was named after a city. Every place I visited in the process of making this album had offered me a song.
Paris, Berlin, Medellín, Nara… these names held the memory of where the melodies were born, the soil that first allowed them to grow.

For LETTER, each title was a word, one after the other forming a sentence:

Dear Public Your Love Saved Me From Solitude Forever
Sincerely
Sofiane

P.S. I Wrote This Album In Asia

It was a love letter addressed directly to you, to thank you for changing my life forever.

For NOCHE, I was touring in South America, composing only at night.
To be pure and poetic, I wanted each song name to be one word in Spanish: Estrella, Luna, Noche… like a fragment of the nocturnal world I was living in.

For this fourth album, composed in L.A and California where I live now, it will be different.

I want every track to be a short sentence containing a mood / a scene, similar to a Blues or Jazz standard. A story told without complete narration.

In Piano Scene #3, I revealed the name of the opening track: Sunrise In Your Eyes.

What I haven’t told you yet is that I wanted to create a hidden symmetry between the first and the last breath of the album.

So the twentieth and final track will be called: Your Eyes On Sunset.

The most ambitious album of my career so far opens with sunrise, closes with sunset.
